My grandmother came from North Vietnam, left her husband angry because of his adultery and went to South Vietnam.
Married to my grandfather, her 3rd husband a North Vietnamese mine owner. Besides being a temperamental woman, she had a shop and went around the country, to Cambodia and Laos to shop silk. She was great at cooking and after the difficult times she opened a dinner in Saigon. She got 2 sons and 4 daughters, where my mother was kept at home because of her weak heart. She read a lot but couldn’t cook before she came to Denmark. She had on the other hand tasted my grandmother’s food all her life. When my mother landed in Denmark she became a kitchen assistant trainee while she had 4 small children from 9 months to 7 years and a cleaning job next door. The education with internship in Aalborg to Hjørring in 1980 to 1985 was without a Vietnamese Danish dictionary or interpreter. She searched hundreds of jobs, but got “no” on “no”, so she went to the bank and borrowed 500,000 dkr and opened a 250 m2 barbecue restaurant in Aabybro in 1986.
In 2003 I got her to leave Aalborg for good and placed her in Lêles first small kitchen of 10 m2 and handled the Frenchman and Chinese dishwashers who could not speak Danish. She tasted every dish as she trained me in the Vietnamese recipes. Yes I couldn’t cook at age 30 but I had tasted her and my grandmother’s food and tasted me through Vietnam from 1995 to 1997. My grandmother is a dominant lady, my mother is a boss lady and I have some of the funniest, craziest and exciting moments with my Boss-Mother.
